Authors of non-Open Access articles retain copyright in the articles but grant Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press exclusive publishing rights. This grant of rights includes the rights to publish, reproduce, distribute, display, and store the article in all formats; to translate the article into other languages; to create adaptations, summaries, extracts, or derivations of the article; and to license others to do any or all of the above.

Articles that carry the Open Access designation are immediately distributed under one of two Creative Commons Licenses: (i) CC-BY-NC license (Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International), as described at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/, or (ii) CC-BY License (Attribution 4.0 International), as described at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. The CC-BY license permits commercial use, including reproduction, adaptation, and distribution of the article provided the original author and source are credited.
