In this issue, Brown et al. (LearnMem a054203.125) explore sex differences in fear memory formation by interrogating the targets of both K48 and M1 polyubiquitination across the extended consolidation period of a contextual fear memory. Utilizing a novel Tandem Ubiquitin Binding Entity in conjunction with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry, they identified unique protein target and utilization profiles that differed significantly between sexes and across time despite K48 and M1 polyubiquitination being required in both sexes for fear memory formation. This research is the first to show in depth polyubiquitin dynamics in both sexes across the consolidation period and highlights the need to continue to investigate memory in a sex-specific manner.
