Fear to the light CS, the intertrial interval period of the light test, and to the context. Male rats showed significantly higher (P < 0.05) fear-potentiated startle to the light cue during the light CS test compared to females (A). Fear during the intertrial interval was also higher in males than in females (P < 0.05) during the light CS session (B). Freezing during the context test session was significantly higher in males than in females (P < 0.01) and in rats trained with delayed shocks as compared to rats given immediate shock training (P < 0.0001) (C).
