Glucocorticoids are potent memory modulators that can modify behavior in an adaptive or maladaptive manner. Brosens et al. (LearnMem 125–132) assessed whether corticosterone (CORT) given acutely after learning modifies remote fear memory. CORT-induced remote memory impairment was associated with altered correlated activity between brain regions. Remote auditory fear memory retrieval was associated with a connectivity network that involves the hippocampal dentate gyrus, amygdala, and prefrontal cortex subregions. A corticosterone treatment after auditory fear conditioning impaired remote auditory fear memory retrieval and was associated with disrupted network connectivity between these regions.
