It is largely believed that maturation of the hippocampal formation and related subfields facilitates a shift toward increased memory specificity. In this issue of Learning & Memory, Kimbler et al. (LearnMem 55–62) investigated whether negative images similarly exhibited reduced generalization across pubertal development of the hippocampus. Both volumetric and anatomical connectivity with the medial prefrontal cortex evidenced a positive relation between hippocampal pubertal maturation and negative generalization. Generalization for negative images was elevated with cross-sectional pubertal development of the hippocampal formation and its connection with related structures. The cover art uses an interpretation of a popular The Office meme to highlight that pubertal maturation of the hippocampal formation is an important period in the developmentally related balance between discrimination and generalization behavior, where an imbalance may potentially contribute to negative overgeneralization during peripuberty.
