Working memory is commonly impaired in posttraumatic stress disorder, although rodent models using both sexes have not investigated this relationship. In this issue of Learning & Memory, McGonigle et al. (LearnMem 1–11) used the odor span task to assess chronic and cue-reactive working memory performance in male and female rats within a footshock model of posttraumatic stress disorder. The cover art portrays the multiple scented pots that an animal is tasked with remembering during the odor span task, an incrementing non-match-to-sample assessment of working memory. Chronic baseline deficits in working memory were observed, as were footshock cue-induced performance deficits. Depicted is the cue-reactive working memory assessment, the moment of conflict in which the rats first encounter an odor in the arena that was paired 3 wk prior with an aversive footshock experience (indicated by the lightning bolt). Exposure to the footshock-paired odor led footshock history rats to display further deficits in working memory performance.
