Graphical representations of the hypothesis. Some neurons that are responsive for an artificial odor may be coincident with neurons that are responsive to the maternal odor. This could occur to a lesser extent at P14–P17 than at P5–P8 (A). One possibility is that at P14–P17, the number of maternal odor responsive neurons could be reduced before the artificial odor-stroke conditioning in relation to P5–P8 (B).
