Experiment 3b. (A) Experimental protocol. Seventy-two hours after contextual fear conditioning, rats were exposed to the training context for 4 min. Thirty minutes later, one-half of the rats were returned to the training context for an 11-min extinction session (group R4/E11). The other half did not receive any further treatment beyond the 4 min of reactivation and served as controls (group R4/E0). Both groups were evaluated 24 h later in a 5-min test and again 7 d later in a retest. (B) Data show the mean ± SEM of percentage time spent freezing during reactivation, test, and retest.
