Experiment 3a. (A) Experimental protocol. Seventy-two hours after contextual fear conditioning, rats were exposed to the training context for 1 min. Thirty minutes later, half of the rats were returned to the training context for a 14-min extinction session (group R1/E14). The remaining half did not receive any further treatment beyond the 1-min reactivation and served as controls (group R1/E0). Both groups were evaluated 24 h later in a 5-min test and again 7 d later in a retest. (B) Data depict the mean ± SEM of percentage time spent freezing during reactivation, test, and retest.
